Location Scouting & Medics - 1084 days ago
I recently got to accompany my producer husband on a location scout up to Chimney Rock, NC. He’s producing a music video on the song, “In Christ Alone” for an upcoming TV special. I’ve never done a full production shoot (just stock footage) in this type of rugged setting, so the plethora of details that are involved made me glad he’s the producer on this one! For example, they’ve got to cart all the gear from the bottom of a mountain to about midway up. And we’re talking heavy gear. Then once it arrives at the base of the falls on the ATVs, then it’s got to be hauled by hand up 40-50 feet of sloping, rocky hillside. Details such as an on-site medic, the location of the closest hospital, who’s in charge of supervising the safety of the crew during the hauling process, etc. are the types of things you want to figure out BEFORE the day of the shoot. Don’t wait until the night before to quickly cover all your bases and hope things work out okay. Also, another reminder why production liability insurance is important. If someone does get hurt, and you’ve overlooked insurance, who’s going to foot the bill? And who’s going to want to work for you again? Then there’s food. The crew has to eat, so you’ve got to get catering to the top of a mountain figured out. And then there’s tourists – the park is still open, so you’re going to have curious people hanging around, asking questions, and maybe getting in the shot. Somebody’s got to be assigned to dealing with that. Lots to take care of. I leave it to him, and I’ll spend the day hanging out with my 2 year old…
